Marshmallow Fondant / Homemade

Marshmallow Fondant, great stuff.

How awesome it is that you can actually make your own fondant at home.  Marshmallow fondant. I had tried to make it about 10 years ago since the price for the ready to use fondant was not accessible at all and there were not many different brands to choose from.

The first time was a not a complete disaster but I was not happy with the results. I guess it also had to do with the reason that I was not very knowledgeable about using fondant.

The second round of times I decided to make fondant was when I was taking a course of cake decorating and one of the cakes used marshmallow fondant. The course was given by Jessica Harris and on that course, she showed how to make the marshmallow fondant. This time I was so happy with the results.

A couple of years back one of my mentors,  Kara made an exquisite blueberry marshmallow fondant. It still is a hit on the cake community. ‘Till this day I have not tried her recipe but I am certain it is so good.

Budget Friendly

As a good working mother, I like easy to make recipes and more if they are budget friendly. And that is what I found with this recipe.

I am a fan of SatinIce fondant and I am the first one to recommend it because of its stability and ease to work with. But, where I live the price for a 20 lb bucket can get expensive if you are not selling the cakes you make. So the best option for me is the marshmallow fondant.

Another thing I do like about it is that you can customize the flavor of fondant.

One of the thinks Liz Merek ( LMF) did was to combine the marshmallow fondant with the Wilton brand fondant and it does work beautifully. This would work perfectly for those occasions when you need a super red fondant or some more practice with it.

Flavor

So many things to make with this homemade marshmallow fondant and with creative flavors to surprise anyone.

Now the way to change the flavor is by using: freeze-dried fruits, powdered spices, powdered flavors, extracts etc.

Cons:

  • Color will fade away after some time.
  • Since It contains no preservatives or stabilizers, the shelf life is shorter.
  • It can not be rolled very thinly.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive to make
  • Fairly easy to work with
  • Combined with a ready to use fondant makes it even better.
  • Customizable.
  • You know the kind of ingredients you are using.
  • Can be made Vegan ( use vegan marshmallows)

Fondant is applied over SMBC (Swiss Meringue Buttercream ) or Ganache  so that extra icing complements the awesome flavor of the marshmallows.
